Description
2019 NeroBufaleffj Sicilia IGT
by Gulfi is a powerful and expressive wine made from 100% Nero d’Avola grown in the historic Bufaleffj vineyard in Val di Noto, Sicily—rooted in black clay, red sand, and limestone soils. This wine opens with a bold bouquet of crushed blackcurrant, blueberry, and dried flowers, layered with spicy notes of lavender, licorice root, and a hint of mineral ash. On the palate, it flows with silken intensity—rides of ripe plum, black cherry and blood orange blend with smoky herbs and saline minerality, framed by firm yet refined tannins and lifted by bright, energetic acidity that carries through to a persistent, spice-tinged finish. The wine is aged for about 24 months in small-format barrels (500 L and 225 L), followed by two years of bottle aging, allowing the tannic structure to soften and the aromatics to develop complexity. A terrific match for grilled or roasted meats, pork-based dishes, intense mushroom preparations, and mature cheeses—the structure and acidity allow it to pair seamlessly with hearty flavors and rich textures. Gulfi, founded in 1996 by Vito Catania in partnership with oenologist Salvo Foti, has championed Nero d’Avola through organic viticulture and meticulous terroir-driven winemaking. NeroBufaleffj is their flagship cru—celebrated for its elegance, density, and capacity to age for over a decade, embodying the pinnacle of Sicilian red wine potential
