2005 Barbera d'Alba Piani DOC
Overview
- Region: Piemonte - The name “Piani” given to this wine indicates the zone where the vineyard is located, which is less steep than the average vine-growing lands (“Piani” is the Italian for “flat”), and more than adequate for the cultivation of Barbera grapes.
- Varietals: Barbera
- Vintage: 2006
- Alcoholic strength: 13%
- Ageing: Piani ages for 8/9 months in wooden barrels (30 to 40% in barriques, some of them new, and the rest in 50 hl. oak casks). Then it is blended, bottled, let to rest for about two months and, finally, released for sale. Low yield, long maceration (even 15 to 20 days) and the right amount of tannin confer the wine the characteristic longevity, complexity and grandeur that can only pair that of the noble Nebbiolo.
- Tasting Notes: Its colour is intense and brilliant ruby red with a liveliness that renders it particularly pleasing and inviting. The fine smelling sensations grow gradually from fruity to winey and tannic. The overall impression is that of a pleasant, stimulating bouquet. The savory and acid tones characterizing this Barbera do not hide its poly-phenolic trait. Its good texture makes it particularly interesting and persistent.
